Spain Social Security to mandate electronic notifications for disability benefits

Spain's Social Security administration is implementing a change to its notification system effective September 1, 2026, as mandated by Order ISM/541/2026. The update expands the requirement for electronic communications, moving away from traditional paper mail for specific groups of citizens.

The new regulations mandate electronic notifications for individuals receiving benefits for maternity or paternity leave, as well as those receiving benefits for pregnancy or breastfeeding risks. Crucially, the mandate now extends to workers on temporary disability (incapacidad temporal) and pensioners receiving permanent disability or non-incapacitating permanent injury benefits.

Officials clarify that while the administration may send an alert via a user's provided device to signal that a communication is available, the official notification itself must be accessed electronically. This shift aims to modernize administrative procedures, though it requires affected individuals to monitor their digital channels to avoid missing critical communications regarding their benefits.
