Spain storms cut mango, avocado harvests; €4.8 M aid for farmers

Heavy winter storms in Spain's Costa Tropical region caused severe damage to mango and avocado orchards, with production projected to fall 35‑40 % compared with the previous year. Juan Camacho of the COAG of Granada said no farm escaped the impact, and producer Gregorio Jiménez expects mango output to drop from about one million kilos to 400‑500 k kilos. The regional Andalusian government announced a €3.7 billion plan to compensate crop losses and repair infrastructure, while the national and regional authorities allocated €4.8 million in emergency aid to 874 affected farmers, averaging roughly €5,500 per recipient.

The aid, administered through Spain's Agroseguro system, is intended to help producers cover losses to fruit, vegetable and cereal crops, as well as damage to equipment and rural roads. Officials stress the assistance is a safety net but not a substitute for comprehensive insurance against increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
