Spain olive sector sees rising production and consumption

The Spanish olive sector is seeing significant shifts in both production and consumption. According to the second harvest forecast by INTERACEITUNA, table olive production for the 2026 campaign could reach 638,000 tonnes. This represents a 26.94% increase compared to 2025. While the overall harvest appears high due to strong physiological development from previous rains, extreme heat and lack of precipitation since February have caused signs of dehydration in some dryland plots, potentially affecting fruit size.

Regarding olive oil, Spanish household consumption saw a major rebound in 2025, increasing by 20.4% to 318.7 million kilograms. This marks the largest growth since 2010, driven largely by a decrease in prices which saw family spending drop by 27.5% compared to the previous year.

On a broader scale, Spain remains the world's leading olive oil producer. The 2025/2026 campaign closed with a production of approximately 1.29 million tonnes, with the Andalusia region contributing roughly 79% of the national total. The sector is also increasingly focusing on the valorization of co-products generated during the milling process.
