Autopsies showed most victims died from cardiopulmonary arrest, a typical sign of drowning. Around 72,000 people entered Ceuta illegally from Morocco within a 24‑hour period, overwhelming the enclave’s five‑person forensic team, which had handled only 76 deaths in the previous year.

Authorities plan to bury the majority of the bodies in Ceuta in the coming days. Fingerprints and DNA samples have been taken; four bodies have been identified through fingerprints and another four are pending DNA confirmation. Spanish police have shared the fingerprints with Moroccan authorities and opened a border office where families can file missing‑person reports and provide DNA samples. Families, including Jamal Bahloul whose brother Mohamed disappeared on July 30, continue to seek answers.
