Spain to experience ‘Iberian Eclipse Trio’ through 2028

Spain is set to experience a rare astronomical phenomenon known as the ‘Iberian Eclipse Trio,’ consisting of three central solar eclipses occurring in three consecutive years.

Following the solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, the sequence will continue with a total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027, which will be visible as a total eclipse in the southern part of Spain. The final event in the trio will be an annular solar eclipse on January 26, 2028, visible as a ‘ring of fire’ across the southern and eastern regions of the country.

While the city of León experienced a significant total solar eclipse in 1905, it will only see partial views of the upcoming 2027 and 2028 eclipses. After the 2028 event, Spain will not witness another central solar eclipse until September 12, 2053.
