Overview

On August 12, 2026, Spain will experience a significant solar eclipse. In Madrid, the event is expected to reach approximately 99.9% obscuration of the solar disk, a major astronomical occurrence for the capital after more than a century.

The eclipse in Madrid is projected to begin at 19:37, peaking at 20:32, and concluding at 21:17 as the sun sets over the mountains. This high level of coverage is expected to cause a dramatic reduction in light and a noticeable drop in temperature. In Ezcaray, the event is noted for the appearance of a luminescent ring.

Observers are advised to use ISO 12312-2 certified eye protection to prevent permanent retinal damage.

This event marks the beginning of a rare astronomical phenomenon known as the ‘Iberian Eclipse Trio,’ which consists of three central solar eclipses occurring in three consecutive years. The sequence will continue with a total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027, visible as a total eclipse in southern Spain. The trio will conclude with an annular solar eclipse on January 26, 2028, which will appear as a ‘ring of fire’ across the southern and eastern regions of the country.

While the city of León saw a significant total solar eclipse in 1905, it will only witness partial views of the 2027 and 2028 events. Following the 2028 eclipse, Spain is not expected to witness another central solar eclipse until September 12, 2053.
