Spain celebrates National Day with military parade in Madrid

Spain celebrates its National Day, popularly known as Día de la Hispanidad, on Monday, October 12, 2026. The central event is a major military parade in Madrid, presided over by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. The parade is expected to feature approximately 4,400 members of the Armed Forces and security forces, 183 vehicles, 82 aircraft, and 286 horses. The procession will follow the Prado-Recoletos axis, starting near Atocha and concluding at Plaza de Colón, with the royal tribune located at Plaza de Neptuno.

The ceremony includes military honors, the raising of the flag, a tribute to the fallen, and a parachute jump with the Spanish flag. Princess Leonor will participate in the parade for the first time since completing her military training. Due to the scale of the event, which is expected to draw 80,000 spectators, Madrid authorities have implemented significant mobility measures. This includes extensive traffic closures in the city center and a reinforcement of the Metro network by up to 70% to accommodate the crowds.

While the day commemorates the historical arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas, the holiday remains a subject of cultural debate regarding its colonial origins. Beyond Madrid, various regional activities are taking place, including Guardia Civil ceremonies in Lugo and Algeciras, and community celebrations in Barañáin.
