Spain National Day 2026 commemorations

Overview

Spain celebrated its National Day, known as ‘Día de la Hispanidad’, on October 12, 2026. The central event in Madrid featured a major military parade presided over by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. The procession, which followed the Prado-Recoletos axis from near Atocha to Plaza de Colón, included approximately 4,400 members of the Armed Forces and security forces—including 530 women—alongside 144 vehicles, 39 motorcycles, and 286 horses.

A notable highlight of the parade was the debut of the VCR 8x8 Dragón armored vehicle. Produced by a consortium including Tess Defence and GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas, the Dragón is slated to replace older platforms like the BMR and VEC; the Ministry of Defense has reached a milestone of 100 units delivered toward a total contract of 348 units by 2028.

The ceremony also included military honors, a tribute to the fallen, a parachute jump with the Spanish flag, and the participation of Princess Leonor following her military training. To manage the expected 80,000 spectators, Madrid authorities implemented extensive traffic closures and reinforced the Metro network by up to 70%.

Emphasizing Spain’s international defense role, Defense Minister Margarita Robles held a videoconference to recognize approximately 3,000 military personnel deployed on NATO, European Union, and United Nations missions across four continents. While the holiday remains a subject of cultural debate regarding its colonial origins, regional activities were also held in locations such as Lugo, Algeciras, and Barañáin.
