Spain to launch UHD digital terrestrial television update
Spain is set to begin a major update to its Digital Terrestrial Television (TDT) system on November 5. The first phase of this transition introduces Ultra High Definition (UHD) broadcasts using the DVB-T2 standard, which allows for higher video information density within the same network space.
The update will introduce several new channels and high-definition options, including the debut of La Séptima. Other expected additions include UHD versions of La 2, Telecinco, and TV3, as well as RNE Accesible, which will feature sign language and subtitling. RTVE is also expected to launch La 2 Cat as an independent signal.
To check if a television is compatible with the new UHD signal, viewers can look for the “La 1 UHD” or “La 1 4K” test signal currently being broadcast by Televisión Española. If the channel displays both video and audio correctly, the device is compatible. If only audio is present or the screen remains black, an external compatible receiver will be required to access UHD content, though standard high-definition channels will remain accessible without changes to existing antennas.
