The Spanish Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda has announced a 45 million euro investment to promote affordable university accommodation. This initiative aims to expand residential options for students, faculty, and researchers, facilitating academic mobility and reducing rental market pressure in university cities.

The first phase of the program expects to create 1,525 housing units, primarily on existing public or university land. The funding is distributed among seven entities across several autonomous communities, including Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia, Madrid, Catalonia, Castilla y León, and Valencia.

Key beneficiaries include the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (approximately 13.4 million euros), the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (8.2 million euros), the Universidad Pablo de Olavide (6.5 million euros), the Universidad de Burgos (5.94 million euros), the Universitat Jaume I (4.56 million euros), the Universidad de Jaén (3.56 million euros), and the Lleida City Council (2.97 million euros).

The Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) has welcomed the decision, noting that rising housing costs have historically hindered equal opportunities and academic mobility. The new residences must maintain a public purpose with affordable prices that include essential services such as electricity, water, and Wi-Fi.
