Spain to triple funding for women's health research to €18 million annually

The Spanish government announced a new programme aimed at closing the historic gender gap in medical research. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the initiative will triple public R&D spending on women’s health to around €18 million per year. The programme, presented at the Fundación Ortega‑Marañón, will be coordinated by the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI), the Institute of Health Carlos III and the State Research Agency. It will fund projects on conditions that disproportionately affect women, including endometriosis, the metabolic‑polycystic ovarian syndrome (SOMP), menopause, autoimmune and thyroid disorders, cardiovascular disease and mental health. Sánchez emphasized that “this initiative will boost research, diagnosis and treatment in areas that have not received enough attention and that affect the lives of thousands of women in our country.”
