Spain tourism gentrification impacts elderly residents
The Social Observatory of the Elderly, an initiative of the CCOO Pensioners' Federation, reports that mass tourism is significantly impacting the quality of life for elderly residents in major Spanish cities.
Key issues identified include the rise in housing and rental costs, which many seniors on fixed pensions cannot afford. This economic pressure, combined with the proliferation of tourist apartments, is driving gentrification and forcing traditional residents to leave their long-term neighborhoods.
Beyond economic factors, the observatory notes a decline in social cohesion. The loss of long-term neighbors and the disappearance of traditional local commerce are eroding the social networks and community solidarity that elderly populations rely on for support.
