Spain citizen mapping identifies 148,000 urban forestry deficiencies

A large-scale citizen science initiative titled ‘Aquí falta un árbol – Ecomapa 2026’ has identified over 148,000 ‘black spots’ regarding urban forestry across 315 municipalities in Spain. The mapping campaign, promoted by organizations including Ecologistas en Acción, Greenpeace, and Oxfam Intermón, involved 2,145 volunteers who documented deficiencies in urban greenery over a single weekend.

The findings categorize the issues into three main types: approximately 44,882 empty or paved-over tree pits, 27,116 pits containing tree stumps or dead trees, and 76,164 ‘suffocating’ pits where concrete or resin prevents adequate growth. Localized results were reported in various cities, including Alicante, where 1,670 deficiencies were noted, and Pontevedra, which identified 326 critical points.

Organizers state that the data aims to highlight the urgent need for increased natural shade and biodiversity to combat the urban heat island effect and rising temperatures. The results will be submitted to local municipal governments to advocate for improved maintenance, better tree pit design, and the implementation of urban forestry plans.
