Spain used car market shows growth amid aging vehicle fleet

The Spanish used car market showed significant growth in the first seven months of 2026, with 1,414,355 vehicles sold, representing a 3.16% increase compared to the previous year. This volume is nearly double the rate of new car registrations, which totaled 749,656 units.

Diesel engines remain dominant in the second-hand sector, accounting for approximately half of all transactions with 669,186 units sold. Gasoline vehicles followed with 516,175 units. While electrified models like hybrids and pure electric vehicles are gaining ground, they remain a minority of the market.

Data from Carfax indicates that the most popular used models are aging significantly. Approximately 61% of the best-selling used cars are over 15 years old, with an average age of 16.32 years and an average mileage of 188,979 kilometers. This exceeds the national average for the general vehicle fleet. Additionally, these high-demand models tend to have more owners, averaging 2.9 per vehicle.

The most sought-after models include the Volkswagen Golf, Seat Ibiza, and Renault Mégane. Regionally, Madrid stands out for having the youngest used car fleet, with an average age of 9.87 years, while regions like Castilla y León and Asturias report much higher average ages exceeding 15 years.
