Spain's aging car fleet and growing used and renting markets
Overview
Spain’s passenger-car fleet continues to age, with the 2025 ANFAC Annual Report recording a national average of 14.6 years. Nearly half of the 26.7 million vehicles are older than 15 years, and two-thirds exceed ten years. Regional disparities persist: Madrid, the Valencian Community, Catalonia, and the Balearic Islands maintain the youngest fleets (11–14 years), while Ceuta and Melilla report the oldest averages at 17.9 years. In Navarre, the average age is 15.8 years, with 54.6% of cars exceeding 15 years; for every new registration, 2.94 older cars remain in circulation.
The used-car market is expanding, with 1,414,355 vehicles sold in the first seven months of 2026, a 3.16% increase from the previous year. This volume is nearly double the rate of new car registrations. Diesel engines remain dominant in this sector, accounting for approximately half of all transactions. Data from Carfax indicates that 61% of the best-selling used cars are over 15 years old, with an average age of 16.32 years and an average mileage of 188,979 kilometers.
Simultaneously, the vehicle-renting sector is growing. Nationally, the renting fleet increased by 8.0% to 1,063,492 units according to the Asociación Española de Renting de Vehículos (AER). In León, the renting fleet grew 15.2% in the first half of 2026, driven by self-employed users and medium-sized firms. While electrified vehicle registrations are seeing double-digit growth, they remain a small fraction of the total fleet, which stands at 2.4% nationally.
