Spain vehicle fleet shows growth in motorcycles and aging passenger cars

Spain's vehicle fleet is experiencing divergent trends across different segments. The number of two-wheeled vehicles has surpassed four million units, marking a 46% increase over the last decade. This growth is driven primarily by motorcycles and scooters, which serve as urban mobility alternatives to combat congestion and parking difficulties. Notably, motorcycles saw a 71% increase between 2019 and 2024, while scooters grew by 53%. This trend is also reflected in a changing demographic, with significant growth among riders aged 50 to 60.

In contrast, the passenger car market faces challenges regarding fleet renewal. The average age of cars in Spain has risen to 14.6 years. Of the 26.7 million passenger cars currently in circulation, approximately 12.9 million are older than 15 years. This aging fleet presents implications for road safety, emissions, and energy efficiency. Regional disparities exist, with Madrid maintaining the youngest fleet at an average age of 11.3 years, significantly lower than the national average.
