Spain and Colombia face severe forest fires and water shortages

Spain and Colombia are facing significant environmental challenges due to forest fires and water scarcity. In Spain, the total area burned in 2026 has reached approximately 296,502 hectares, which is roughly 3.5 times the annual average since 2006. The Niebla fire in Huelva is noted as one of the most devastating in the country this century. The Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) has launched an interactive report to track these incidents, while the government addresses the impact of climate change on these complex fires.

In Colombia, forest fires have affected 119,569 hectares of crops and productive systems. The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) reported that 78 people have been affected and several homes destroyed. Authorities are preparing for the critical El Niño period expected between October 2026 and April 2027. In the Corantioquia region, 45 fires and 19 aqueduct systems facing shortages or rationing have been recorded. The UNGRD has allocated 38.9 billion pesos to strengthen operational responses and protect national parks.
