Spain wildfires: Niebla blaze exceeds control capacity
Large-scale wildfires are ravaging Spain, with a particularly devastating blaze near Niebla in Andalusia currently described by regional emergency head Antonio Sanz as being beyond the capacity of authorities to control. The Niebla fire has affected nearly 20,000 hectares and has forced the evacuation of approximately 500 people. Firefighters are struggling against high winds, rugged terrain, and convective phenomena that create fire clouds and spread embers in multiple directions.
Across the country, the wildfire season has been exceptionally severe due to heatwaves and drought. According to the European Forest Fire Information System, over 244,000 hectares have been burned in approximately 400 fires this year, a figure six times higher than the same period last year.
Other active fires include a blaze in Tirig, Castellon, which has burned 800 hectares and led to 900 evacuations, and a fire in Segovia that displaced 176 residents. Emergency services continue to prioritize life safety and the protection of populated areas as they combat the spreading flames.
