Spain readies for total solar eclipse on Aug 12, 2026, with Perseids

A total solar eclipse will cross Spain on 12 August 2026, offering near‑total darkness in the coastal town of Nigrán (over 99 % obscuration) and full totality in much of Castilla y León. Local authorities have organised guided viewing sessions, including a night‑time program that links the eclipse with the peak of the Perseids meteor shower. In Nigrán, the municipal council will provide telescopes, projectors and certified eclipse glasses, while a workshop for children will teach how to build pinhole projectors. Sierra Nevada ski resort will run a special night‑time telecabina service from 2 700 m altitude, allowing visitors to watch both the eclipse and the Perseids. The Instituto Geográfico Nacional has published an interactive map showing exact times and durations for each municipality. Astronomer and YouTuber José Luís Crespo warned that cloud cover could jeopardise visibility. Author Roberto Brasero has released a guide promoting “stellar tourism” to travel across Spain for the series of eclipses occurring between 2026 and 2028. The event is expected to attract thousands of enthusiasts, generate media coverage and boost local tourism, while the Perseids will provide a spectacular meteor display after the eclipse.
