United States raises maximum wildfire alert as 94 major fires burn
The United States has kept its Level 5 wildfire alert, the highest tier of national readiness, as 94 large fires continue to burn across the country. More than 28,700 firefighters and support personnel are deployed to combat the blazes, which have already scorched about 2.1 million hectares this year.
The National Interagency Fire Center reports that 45,184 wildfires have occurred so far this season, the most in a ten‑year span. On Tuesday, 97 new fires were logged, including three of extreme size. In the Pacific Northwest, the Sinlahekin fire in Washington has expanded to over 47,348 hectares near the Canadian border, while the Little Giant fire near Lake Chelan has burned more than 28,327 hectares. At least 65,000 residents in Washington remain under evacuation orders, and thousands more have been displaced in other states such as Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Nevada.
