U.S. Wildfire Preparedness Level 5

In mid‑July 2026 U.S. fire officials raised the national wildfire preparedness status to level 5, the first elevation since October 2024, as the season had already burned about 4 million acres and engaged roughly 19,400 firefighters on 74 large fires across the West and parts of the Midwest. A week later the level‑5 status was reaffirmed; all available assets—helicopters, airtankers, funding and personnel—were fully allocated, and agencies were consolidated into a single Wildland Fire Services entity to coordinate the response.

By late July the situation escalated further. More than 90 large fires were active, scorching over 700,000 hectares of forest and rangeland, especially in Oregon, California, Washington and Colorado. The National Interagency Fire Center linked the rapid spread to a prolonged drought and record‑high temperatures. Scientists warned that flash‑drought conditions create “hyper‑flammable” landscapes, accelerating fire growth.

Analysts continue to place the U.S. crisis within a broader climate‑driven pattern of extreme wildfires worldwide. While fire‑related carbon emissions are at a historic low globally because activity has declined sharply in Africa and Asia, the paradox underscores how regional climate stress and land‑use changes are intensifying U.S. wildfire risks.
