Spain's Aging Car Fleet and Rapid Renting Growth Signal Used‑Vehicle Market Shift

The average age of vehicles in Spain has risen to over 14 years, according to data from the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT). More than two million used‑car transactions are completed each year, with the majority involving cars older than ten years. Buyers are urged to verify the exact registration date to avoid age‑fraud, assess depreciation accurately, and determine the appropriate emissions label (B, C, ECO or Zero Emissions) required for road use.

In the province of León, the vehicle‑renting fleet expanded by 15.2% to 2,672 units in the first half of 2026, outpacing the national increase of 8.0% to 1,063,492 units reported by the Asociación Española de Renting de Vehículos (AER). León now ranks third in total renting vehicles within Castile and León and second in the number of renting customers (1,188), driven mainly by self‑employed individuals and medium‑sized companies. AER president José Martín Castro highlighted the strong demand from autonomous users and the notable growth among medium‑size firms.
