Spain's agriculture ministry defends Tajo‑Segura water transfer and pushes for stronger CAP funding

Joaquín Buendía, the newly appointed counselor for Agriculture, has asked to meet with the Ministers of Agriculture and Ecological Transition and with the president of the Segura River Basin Confederation to defend the Tajo‑Segura water transfer. He argues that water is poorly allocated, notes that the Tajo reservoirs are at 84 % capacity, and seeks to provide citizens with transparent data while adapting exploitation rules to ecological flow requirements.

Ramón Fernández‑Pacheco, acting counselor for Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development in Andalusia, called for a single, decisive voice in the negotiations for the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2028‑2034. He warned that Andalusia, a major agricultural region, risks further budget cuts after losing more than €500 million since 2023, and urged the creation of an independent fund and greater regional flexibility to ensure the sector’s survival and competitiveness.
