Spain's airports set record traffic on 1 August 2026

On 1 August 2026 Eurocontrol recorded the highest weekly air‑traffic volume among the 41 European states it monitors, with 6,697 take‑offs and landings at Spanish airports. ENAIRE, the state‑run air‑traffic manager, logged 8,542 flights that day, surpassing the previous record set just two weeks earlier.

The surge reflects a tourism boom, with about 85 % of the estimated 100 million visitors to Spain this year arriving by plane. While the traffic surge boosted airport activity, punctuality suffered at Palma, Barajas and El Prat airports. Major European neighbours such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and France recorded lower traffic levels, underscoring Spain's dominant position in summer air travel.

Industry observers note that the record‑breaking weeks highlight both the strength of Spain’s tourism sector and emerging pressures on airport capacity and on‑time performance.
