Spain's Almería, Algeciras and Tarifa ports unveil major development projects

The Port Authority of Almería announced a new service area at the western entrance of the port, covering more than 8,500 m². The project will include a restaurant, a supermarket and a large parking zone, creating about 50 direct jobs and generating over USD 5 million in revenue for the authority. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2028 and aims to improve passenger experience and reduce congestion during ferry operations.

The Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) presented its 2030‑2040 strategic roadmap for the Algeciras and Tarifa ports. The plan targets higher efficiency, decarbonisation, digitalisation and expanded intermodal capacity. Key initiatives include the “Plan Hércules” redevelopment of the Algeciras maritime station, expansion of container handling to 7.5 million TEU (with a 9 million TEU target by 2035), and the launch of a fully electric ferry service between Tarifa and Tangier City by 2027. Additional measures cover rail terminal upgrades, AI‑driven operational monitoring and broader environmental management.
