Spain's Almería and Lorca address rental affordability amid rising housing costs
In Almería, the average price of a shared‑room rental is €322.50 per month, representing about 15 % of the regional average gross salary. This share is lower than in provinces such as Cádiz (22 %) and Málaga (21 %), but higher than in other Andalusian cities like Granada and Córdoba. Analysts note that using gross wages understates the true housing burden after taxes and other deductions.
Meanwhile, the Murcia regional government approved €389,000 to finance nine protected affordable homes in Lorca. Built by the municipal housing company Suvilor on a historic‑centre site, the development involves a total investment of roughly €1.6 million and guarantees at least 50 years of low‑cost rental provision for young people, large families and people with disabilities. The project also aims to regenerate the city centre while expanding the supply of affordable rental housing.
Both initiatives reflect Spain’s broader challenge of high rental prices, especially for young adults, and illustrate local authorities’ efforts to increase affordable housing options.
