Spain's bp‑Iberdrola Green Hydrogen Plant at Castellón Begins Commissioning
Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition approved the reallocation of up to €211 million from the EU IPCEI Hy2USE programme to a joint venture between Iberdrola España and bp at the Castellón refinery. The funding, supplemented by €15 million from NextGenerationEU programmes, supports the construction of a 25‑MW electrolyser plant that uses five 5‑MW PEM modules supplied by Plug Power.
The plant, now in commissioning tests, is expected to start producing green hydrogen before the end of the year and to reach an annual output of around 2,800 tonnes by 2026, making it Spain’s largest operational green hydrogen facility. The project aims to replace grey hydrogen used at the refinery and to help decarbonise hard‑to‑abate industrial sectors such as ceramics and chemicals.
