Spain's Castilla y León and Melilla Approve Teacher Workload Reductions

In Castilla y León, the regional education department and the unions CSIF, ANPE and STECyL‑i reached a pre‑agreement to introduce a monthly tutoring supplement that will start at €20 and rise to €60 by the 2028‑2029 school year. The deal also commits to cut the teaching load for teachers over 55 in three phases, eventually reducing the schedule by up to three hours and setting a final workload of 21 teaching hours for primary staff and 14 periods for secondary staff.

In the Spanish enclave of Melilla, the SATE‑STEs union together with ANPE Melilla asked the Ministry of Education to cut two hours from the teaching timetable and half an hour from other duties. The ministry replied that no interim teachers will be hired to cover the lost time, so the reduction must be applied proportionally through complementary and free‑disposition hours. The union also called for stronger school‑security guarantees, improved teacher‑to‑student ratios, reduced bureaucracy, and increased investment in facilities and professional development.
