Spain's Castilla y León records 826 forest fires as 2026 blaze season intensifies
The autonomous community of Castilla y León reported 826 forest fire incidents in the first half of 2026, with 83% classified as small outbursts that were quickly contained. Regional authorities allocated more than seven million euros for the fire‑prevention and suppression operation, including the procurement of five helicopters and helitrasported crews. The same team has also assisted neighboring regions in Zaragoza and Portugal.
Nationally, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the European Forest Fire Information System estimate that around 50,000 hectares have burned in Spain this year, with Cantabria alone accounting for roughly 15,500 hectares. Fourteen major fires over 500 hectares have been recorded, affecting areas such as the Costa Brava, Huelva, Huesca, Córdoba and León. Across the European Union, burned area totals about 130,400 hectares, roughly 16% above the seasonal average.
