Spain's coastal towns face ecological crisis from waste dumping

In Santa Pola, the environmental group Amigos de los Humedales del Sur de Alicante (AHSA) has warned that the removal of waste containers from the natural park corridor around the historic Torre del Tamarit has led to litter accumulation, grey‑ and black‑water discharges from caravans, and a heightened risk of aquifer and wetland contamination.

In Algeciras, the organisation Verdemar (Ecologistas en Acción) has reported a new sanctioning procedure over repeated waste spills at El Rinconcillo and the former Los Ladrillos beach. The group attributes the ongoing contamination to inadequate sanitation infrastructure that mixes sewage and storm water, and it is demanding continuous pump‑system monitoring, immediate cleanup of accumulated sludge and waste, and greater transparency from the municipal authorities.
