In late July 2026, Greenpeace released a report highlighting the unprecedented fragility of Spain’s 7,900 km coastline. It identified 194 critical points where rapid urban expansion, sea‑level rise and more intense storms threaten beaches and ecosystems, citing especially vulnerable areas such as the Ebro Delta, Doñana marshes, La Manga del Mar Menor, and parts of the Balearics and Canary Islands. The organization called for nature‑based coastal management, a halt to new construction in flood‑prone zones, and the relocation of exposed infrastructure.

A few days later, regional environmental groups reported acute waste‑dumping problems in specific coastal towns. In Santa Pola, the removal of waste containers from a natural‑park corridor led to litter accumulation and grey‑ and black‑water discharges, raising concerns about aquifer and wetland contamination. In Algeciras, repeated waste spills at El Rinconcillo and the former Los Ladrillos beach were linked to inadequate sanitation that mixes sewage with storm water. The groups demanded immediate clean‑up, continuous pump‑system monitoring, and greater municipal transparency.
