Spain's coastal towns tackle invasive algae on Gijón and Rota beaches

Municipal crews in Gijón used a tractor to remove accumulated seaweed from Arbeyal beach, sparking mixed reactions among locals—some see the algae as natural, others call for deeper cleaning.

In Rota, the municipal beach delegation reported that more than 3.27 million kilograms of invasive algae have been extracted from several spots, including Playa del Chorrillo, Duque de Nájera and Puntalillo, during the summer. The effort relies on daily operations coordinated with the tides and consumes a substantial share of the towns' human and material resources.
