Spain's 'Dmocracia' Youth Campaign Sparks Trademark Dispute
The Spanish government launched a promotional campaign called "Dmocracia" to celebrate the 50th anniversary of democracy and to spread democratic values among young people. The initiative used a fictitious clothing line, produced with a budget of €386,000, intended solely for promotional events rather than commercial sale. Photoshoot sessions were held inside the Congress of Deputies with several content creators.
On July 9, the right‑wing party Vox filed a trademark application for the name "Dmocracia. Cuando te vistes, te posicionas" with the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office. The request is still pending. Vox's move follows its public criticism of the campaign’s spending, arguing that the government should not allocate public funds to such promotional clothing projects.
The dispute highlights tensions between the governing PSOE and opposition parties over the use of public resources for symbolic initiatives tied to the democratic anniversary.
