Spain's Economy Shows Early Signs of Recovery
Advanced indicators suggest the Spanish economy is entering the second half of the year on a positive footing. Government forecasts project a 2.6% growth rate for 2026, a rise from earlier estimates of 2.2‑2.4%, while real‑time data from AIReF point to an inter‑annual increase of 3%. Strong consumer demand is evident in car sales, with June marking the best month since 2019 for both electric/hybrid vehicles and light commercial vehicles, the latter up 13% year‑on‑year. Retail sectors such as household goods, basic food and leisure also reported solid gains.
Chamber of Commerce president José Luis Bonet highlighted the vigorous attitude of Spanish SMEs, calling for an internationalisation plan and AI adoption backed by EU Next Generation funds. He argued that Spain’s small‑ and medium‑sized firms are well‑positioned to lead Europe’s economic resurgence. Meanwhile, Oscar Arce, the European Central Bank’s director‑general for economics, noted improving household consumption and public‑private investment as key drivers, confirming that Europe retains margin for growth despite external pressures such as the conflict in Iran.
