Spain’s Ecovidrio launches summer green‑flag glass recycling campaign

Ecovidrio, the entity responsible for managing glass waste in Spain, has rolled out a nationwide summer campaign to boost glass recycling, focusing on the hospitality sector. The initiative, known as the “Movimiento Banderas Verdes”, involves more than 120 coastal municipalities and over 12,000 bars, restaurants and kiosks, installing new containers and distributing wheeled bins to facilitate source‑separation.

Environmental educators are visiting venues to advise on proper waste handling, energy and water use, and sustainable purchasing. The campaign aims to raise the recycling rate, which already stands at seven out of ten glass containers, and to recognize municipalities and establishments that meet targets with a Green Flag of Sustainability. This summer, the town of Alboraia in the Valencian Community will compete with up to 28 other municipalities for the award, following previous winners such as Calpe and Peníscola. The effort is part of a broader push toward a circular economy and reduced CO₂ emissions.

Key figures include the deployment of 200 new containers, distribution of roughly 1,300 wheeled bins, and participation by more than 68 hospitality businesses in Alboraia alone.
