Spain expands Ecovidrio glass recycling campaign

Entities: Alicante City Council · Juan Gabriel · Rafael Alema · Ecovidrio · Manuel Sala

Overview

The Ecovidrio "Bandera Verde" (Green Flag) initiative continued its rapid rollout across Spain in July 2026. Following the June expansion that added LPG‑powered collection trucks in Marbella, new purple textile containers in Salamanca, and dozens of glass‑collection bins in over 120 coastal municipalities, the programme deepened its regional coordination.

On 23 July, the Generalitat Valenciana formalised a four‑year cooperation pact with the producer‑responsibility schemes Ecovidrio and Ecolec Envases. Vice President Vicente Martínez Mus highlighted the ambition to reach a 75 % glass‑recycling rate, stressing data‑driven planning and tailored support for each municipality. The agreement will harmonise collection, processing and reporting across the Valencian community, building on the 94 854 tonnes of glass collected in 2025 (≈17.5 kg per resident).

Three days later, Alicante became the first Spanish city to install a transparent glass‑recycling container, featuring a methacrylate side panel that lets the public see the contents and confront misconceptions about glass waste. Simultaneously, Ecovidrio launched the summer campaign “No cerramos por vacaciones”, using humor and the song “Se me olvidó otra vez” to remind citizens that recycling should not pause during holidays—a response to the typical 25 % drop in glass recycling during the summer months.

These actions reinforce the broader push to improve selective glass collection, especially in hospitality venues, and to sustain recycling habits throughout the tourist season.
