Spain confronts record wildfires, thousands evacuated

In July 2026 Spain faced an unprecedented wave of wildfires across multiple regions. The fire in the Cinco Villas area of Zaragoza grew to more than 14,000 hectares, forcing the evacuation of six villages and affecting over 1,100 residents. Authorities deployed dozens of ground crews, hundreds of firefighters, and dozens of aircraft, while a suspect was arrested with incendiary materials.

In the Catalan municipality of Aiguamúrcia, five separate fires burned over nine days, prompting investigations into possible arson. The most severe blaze earlier in the week consumed 154 hectares and forced the temporary confinement of about 2,500 people.

A separate blaze near Hinojosas de Calatrava in Ciudad Real razed nearly 900 hectares of scrubland; officials attribute it to negligence during agricultural work. In Sagunt, a 2.2‑kilometre firebreak was approved to protect vulnerable forest zones.

Experts note that Spain has burned over 300,000 hectares between 2022 and 2025, labeling the phenomenon “megafires.” Drought, extreme heat waves, and abandoned farmland are cited as drivers, prompting calls for a shift from pure extinction tactics to stronger prevention and land‑management strategies. Communities have shown solidarity, with volunteers assisting firefighting efforts and supporting evacuated neighbours.
