Spain's government moves to approve budget and fiscal ceiling amid Catalonia funding debate

The Spanish government plans to present the General State Budget and a spending ceiling in July, aiming to extend the legislative term and address the fiscal deficit for 2027. Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo announced that the macro‑economic framework will be discussed at a cabinet meeting on 23 June, with the fiscal ceiling and deficit path to follow in mid‑July. The administration also intends to revive the stalled digital protection bill that would ban users under 16 from social media platforms.

At the same time, political commentators argue that the Sánchez government has increased financial assistance to Catalonia, citing historical preferential treatment and recent allocations from the autonomous liquidity fund. The opinion piece claims Catalonia has received more than €120 billion from this fund and related mechanisms, positioning the region as a major beneficiary of national spending.

These developments occur amid judicial scrutiny of the ruling party and negotiations with parliamentary partners ahead of the summer recess.
