Spain's Guardia Civil chief Mercedes González indicted in Leire case

Mercedes González, director general of the Guardia Civil, was indicted by Audiencia Nacional judge Santiago Pedraz for alleged prevarication and obstruction of justice in the investigation known as the Leire case. Despite the indictment, she has remained in her post and no immediate removal or resignation has been announced.

The Spanish government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has defended officials under investigation, rejecting claims that the judiciary is conspiring against the executive. The episode has sparked criticism and debate over the political handling of judicial investigations in Spain.
