Spain's Guardia Civil leadership indicted over alleged Leire case interference
Judge Santiago Pedraz of the Audiencia Nacional has formally charged Mercedes González, the director general of the Guardia Civil, and Manuel Llamas, the body’s DAO, with prevarication and obstruction of justice. The indictment stems from accusations that former socialist activist Leire Díez sought to pressure the Guardia Civil to open an inquiry into the UCO (Unidad Central Operativa) concerning alleged leaks of a WhatsApp exchange involving former minister José Luis Ábalos and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Testimony indicated that Llamas instructed agents to avoid “proactive” political cases, while González denied any involvement in a conspiracy against the UCO during a Senate appearance on 16 June. The investigation points to three meetings between González and Díez in late 2024 and early 2025, and to the automatic deletion of messages between the two participants on the day a related story was published.
