Spain's Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases Impact 2.5 M, Call for Early Diagnosis

More than 2.5 million people in Spain live with immune‑mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID), a group of chronic autoimmune conditions that can damage organs and reduce quality of life.

Experts from dermatology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, hospital pharmacy and immunology gathered at the InmunoHábitat scientific forum, organized by AbbVie, to stress the importance of early diagnosis and coordinated, personalized care. The meeting introduced the MAIMID framework, outlining key challenges and action lines for better IMID management. Luis Nudelman, Medical Director of AbbVie Spain, said the forum “fosters collaboration between medical specialties, knowledge exchange and a more integrated view of the patient.”

Clinicians highlighted that IMID affect over 80 distinct diseases, often present comorbidities such as cardiovascular risk, metabolic syndrome or depression, and require treatment goals beyond symptom control to modify disease progression and improve long‑term outcomes.
