Spain's IMV benefit: Eligibility for adults and inheritance risks
The Spanish Social Security system and the National Institute of Social Security (INSS) have provided clarifications regarding the Ingreso Mínimo Vital (IMV) benefit.
Regarding eligibility, the INSS confirmed that individuals over the age of 30 living in their parents' homes may qualify for the IMV, provided they meet the established economic vulnerability requirements. As of July, the program reached approximately 2.68 million people across 879,225 households, with a significant portion of beneficiaries being children and adolescents.
However, recipients must be cautious regarding changes in wealth. The Social Security administration reviews income and assets, and receiving an inheritance can trigger a requirement to repay previously received funds. Because the IMV calculation considers monthly income, household composition, and available economic resources, an inheritance may increase a beneficiary's computable wealth beyond the permitted threshold, potentially resulting in repayment demands exceeding 1,000 euros.
