European security agencies alert to jihadist calls targeting protests

Spanish authorities have detected jihadist propaganda on a website linked to the Islamic State (Daesh) calling for attacks against police officers and demonstrators during ongoing protests across Europe. The warnings specifically identify Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal as target countries.

According to internal documents from Spain’s Cybersecurity Coordination Office (OCC), the propaganda encourages militants to exploit large-scale public gatherings and street clashes to maximize casualties. The messages reportedly include practical instructions for carrying out attacks using explosives, knives, and vehicles. In the case of explosives, the content advocates for suicide attacks, described as ‘martyrdom’, while instructions for knife attacks specify weapon lengths and target body parts to ensure maximum damage.

The alerts come amid widespread social unrest in Europe driven by the cost-of-living crisis and housing shortages. Recent demonstrations in France saw significant violence, including the firebombing of public buildings in Limoges and Lyon. In response, Portugal’s Internal Security System (SSI) has confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with relevant authorities.
