Spain's July inflation rises to 3.5% as fuel prices surge; Mercadona trims egg prices

Spain's consumer price index climbed to an annual 3.5% in July, up three‑tenths of a percentage point from June. The increase was driven chiefly by higher fuel and electricity costs, according to data from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE). Underlying inflation, which excludes food and energy, also rose to 2.8%, signalling persistent price pressure that may prompt short‑term policy responses.

Meanwhile, Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona announced its third price reduction on eggs in 2026. The average discount on eggs this year reached about 7.5%, with the price of a dozen large eggs falling from €3.20 to €3.05. The retailer’s moves reflect an effort to keep staple food items affordable amid broader inflationary trends.
