King Felipe VI praises coordination as Spain battles massive wildfires

King Felipe VI visited the sports pavilion in Villamanta, Madrid, where about 200 residents displaced by the wildfires were being housed. He praised the "exemplar" coordination of all administrations and emergency services, noting that the fires have caused an incalculable loss of natural heritage.

The monarch highlighted that the EU Civil Protection Mechanism is functioning and may need further strengthening. He urged the public to follow authorities’ instructions to minimise damage. He reported some positive signs in the evolution of the fires despite the high risk that remains.

Spanish authorities say roughly 90,000 people are affected: about 60,000 have been evacuated and nearly 30,000 remain confined at home. The Unit Military of Emergencies (UME) leads the operation after a national emergency was declared. EU member states have supplied six firefighting aircraft (two each from Greece, Italy and Turkey) and a Portuguese military detachment of 129 personnel with 41 vehicles. Guatemala expressed solidarity with Spain, and the Spanish government activated the EU civil‑protection system to request additional resources.
