Overview

On 26 July 2026 large wildfires burned forested areas in the Madrid, Ávila and Toledo provinces, displacing thousands. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia visited the evacuation centre in Villamanta, where around 200 residents were housed in a sports pavilion, and praised the “exemplar” coordination among national, regional and local authorities. The monarch highlighted the functioning of the European Civil Protection Mechanism and called for continued solidarity.

The Military Emergency Unit (UME) leads the operation after a national emergency was declared. EU member states have supplied six firefighting aircraft – two each from Greece, Italy and Turkey – and Portugal sent a detachment of 129 personnel with 41 vehicles. Guatemala expressed solidarity.

Health responders, led by Dr José Luis Franqueza of the SAMER emergency medical team, prioritized medication for chronic patients, mental‑health support, and treatment of infections, wounds, hypertension crises and diabetic decompensations. Approximately 90 000 people are affected, with about 60 000 evacuated and 30 000 remaining confined at home. The situation remains high‑risk but authorities report some positive signs in fire evolution.
