Spain's major infrastructure projects face chronic delays

In Gijón, the demolition of the Carlos Marx viaduct, the first step of the city's rail network plan, has stalled. The tender, budgeted at €54.3 million, was signed four months ago by the municipal government, the Asturias regional authority and the national transport ministry. Adif says the process is "in the necessary procedures" after the local administration voiced concern over the lack of information. The delay adds to a pattern of unclear timelines for large works such as the nearby Solarón site and an intermodal station.

In Sevilla, the SE‑40 ring‑road, a key bypass intended to ease congestion on the SE‑30, remains incomplete after more than three decades of planning. The Sevilla Infrastructure Observatory notes that only about 39 km of the 77.4 km route are operational, with critical sections such as the Guadalquivir crossing still pending due to shifting design choices between a tunnel and a bridge. Ongoing bottlenecks continue to strain traffic flow and limit competitiveness for residents and businesses.
