Spain's Mega Wildfires Trigger Dangerous Firestorm Phenomenon

Massive wildfires in Spain have burned more than 127,000 hectares and affected around 92,000 people, with the provinces of Ávila, Madrid and Castellón hit hardest. Experts label some of the blazes as "sixth‑generation" fires because their behavior is far harder to predict and control.

The extreme heat released by the fires creates powerful updrafts that form towering pyrocumulus clouds. According to Meteored Spain meteorologist Samuel Biener, these clouds can generate lightning that ignites new fires far from the main front and collapse into strong gusts that further accelerate flame spread, turning the incidents into dangerous firestorms.

The phenomenon highlights how mega‑incidents can alter local weather, making firefighting operations significantly more challenging.
