Spain's MIR Residents Propose Workplace Prevention Plan After Three Suicides

In 2026, three medical residents in Spain died by suicide – two in Catalonia and one in the Canary Islands. The cases, occurring in February, April and June, involved doctors in the highly selective MIR (Médico Interno Residente) programme.

The MIR association has responded by presenting a workplace‑prevention plan. Psychiatry resident David Montes, vice‑president of the Association, warned that “the approach to suicide is complex and not linked to a single cause,” urging the health system to examine working conditions that may contribute to depression, anxiety and burnout among doctors.

The proposal calls for systematic mental‑health screening, improved support services and reforms to reduce excessive workload, aiming to address the growing concern over physician wellbeing in Spain.
