Spain's MIR residents see training advantages in Soria and Galicia

In the small University Hospital Santa Bárbara in Soria, doctors and nurses in the MIR programme receive highly individualized training. Heads of study Pablo Guallar and Jesús Berges say that residents rotate through all specialties and perform many procedures, resulting in them being “much better trained” than peers in larger hospitals. They note that the personal attention allows residents to develop independence and practical skills early in their careers.

In Galicia, the public health system (SERGAS) has amended its 2027 temporary‑staffing lists to accommodate MIR doctors whose training was delayed by the COVID‑19 pandemic. The new resolution moves the deadline for submitting applications to 31 October 2026 and the merit‑assessment date to 15 October 2026, ensuring that affected residents can record the full period of their training when the lists are compiled later in the year.
